"Charlotte Staver takes the lead over Noah Wood to win the "A Day at the Races" Open-One-Mile Track Run at the Lion's Stadium at Queen Anne's County High School!"
"A Day at the Races"
Saturday, March 29, 2008
Lions Stadium at Queen Anne's County High School, Centreville, Maryland
Conditions: Cool and a bit windy. The track races took place on Queen Anne's County High School's outdoor track in the Lions Stadium, and they included races for younger children like a two-hundred meter dash and a four-hundred meter dash. There was also an open mile track race as well as a 5K cross-country run they added to the event this year (well according to a race coordinator, it was a bit short being somewhere between three miles and 3.1 miles/5 kilometers). The 5K was on the high school's cross country course that was pretty much flat with several light hills. Towards the middle of the race, the course went briefly into the woods on some trails and even around "Lake Woebegone (Woe-be-gone)" by the playing fields.
The 5K race was one of the first events of the day, followed soon after by the track races that ran simultaneously with the 5K. Noah Wood won the race with a time of 18:59, followed by Ken Staver in 20:18. Darryl Calloway, who has helped to host an Earth Day two-mile run in the past at this venue, finished third with 21:58.
"It was truly a great 'day at the races.' Said Darryl Calloway. "Barb Thompson and her army of volunteers have really gotten it right by organizing a day that promotes family fun and health all at the same time! More adults in our society need to get out and participate more in athletic events with their children."
M. McLaughlin was the female winner in 27:09, followed by K. Thompson with a time of 28:12. A. Sharp was the third female who finished in 30:46.
The one-mile open track race was won by Queen Anne's County High School's Charlotte Staver in a time of 6:16, who ran indoor track & field for Q.A.C. High School last winter. Her younger brother finished second in 6:33 followed closely by Noah Wood in 6:34
"Despite the windy, cool conditions, the day could not have been more perfect for the event," said Allison Harper, an avid runner and triathlete whose two sons, Adam and Samuel, ran their first race in the two-hundred meter track race. "There seemed to be a good turnout for all categories. My boys had a great time at their first running event! It was a nice community-supported event."
